Avant Sessions

Topic: Insights from claims coding
Presenter: Dr Penny Browne, Senior Medical Officer at Avant
Time: 3:00 – 3:15pm
Date: Thursday 11 May

Avant is currently coding more than 6,000 claims to allow research into the causes of claims against medical practitioners and their contributing factors (risks).

Preliminary analysis identifies diagnostic error as a primary cause of claims. Our data shows that around 75% of surgeons will experience a claim relating to diagnostic error over their career. This presentation will describe the scope, taxonomy, and method of the coding project, initial findings regarding risks and behaviours that contributed to claims, and the potential value of the data in identifying intervention measures to mitigate risk.

Topic: Training disputes
Presenter: Dr Penny Browne, Senior Medical Officer at Avant
Time: 9:00 – 9:15pm
Date: Friday 12 May

Avant has been examining disputes arising between trainee doctors and their specialist medical colleges for some time. Our data indicates that although small, the numbers of training disputes have been gradually trending upward since 2005.

This session will highlight some issues that give rise to disputes and how the training stage is a key element of ensuring safety and sustainability in surgery, and other specialisations.
