Avant and AMSA are pleased to announce the project which has been awarded the 2010 Student Research Fellowship. Anthony Minh Tien Chau and Nicholas Myles from the University of NSW have won with their research proposal investigating the prevalence of unnecessary CT scans to determine acute appendicitis, and looking at a streamlined patient scoring system by which to ascertain whether appendicitis is clinically likely in an attempt to reduce CT scans and radiation.
Our judges deemed the proposal
a worthy project which seeks to improve diagnostic accuracy and lead to better clinical and surgical outcomes. There is potential to reduce delay in diagnosis of acute appendicitis and reduce unnecessary CT scans which improves both patient safety and reduces demand on scarce resources. This also aligns with the Avant value of supporting our doctors to ensure the Australian medical industry provides the absolute best in healthcare.
Submissions are judged on the merit and design of the proposal, with criteria assessed including the value and innovation of the intended research to the medical community, and the students' knowledge, approach and methodology.
The standard of entries was exceptional – we are delighted to see the quality of work and dedication of our future doctors. In particular, we would like to congratulate the following students for their excellent proposals, and wish them the very best for their research undertakings:
