The PCEHR Bills were passed by the Senate with 32 amendments on 18 June and the lower house agreed to the changes on 21 June.
Avant supports the PCEHR initiative, due to commence on 1 July 2012, and has been working collaboratively with NEHTA and DoHA on key aspects of the system.
What is actually going to be available from the 1st July 2012?
On 1 July:
- patients will be able to register for the PCEHR
- a web-based provider portal will be available for healthcare providers to access, if they have a HPI and a NASH PKI certificate.
The functionality to upload material onto the system will not be available on 1 July, although there are several lead sites around Australia currently preparing for the implementation of the PCEHR at a local level.
Practices and practitioners who are interested in finding out more about the PCEHR should go to www.ehealth.gov.au for more information. You can register for updates through this site, and there are several learning modules in the Learning Centre section of the site which explains more about the PCEHR.
Avant is in the process of preparing FAQs for members. In the meantime, members who have queries regarding the PCEHR and the potential medico-legal and insurance implications should contact Avant’s Medico-Legal Advisory service for more information.
