We pride ourselves on offering competitive stable premiums and keeping them stable is core to the Avant ethos. Our size and financial strength enables us to achieve this.

When calculating your premium, we consider several factors, including:

  • your category of practice;
  • your gross billings;
  • any optional covers selected or amendments to the standard cover that are requested;
  • the states or territories where you practise;
  • your claims history;
  • the commencement date of your retroactive cover or run-off period;
  • any specific factor which increases risk; and
  • any special discounts or loadings including a risk surcharge.

If applicable, the risk surcharge will be included in accordance with the Medical Indemnity Act 2002 (Cth).

A practitioner indemnity insurance policy is designed to protect the interests and needs of the doctor. It provides cover for civil liability claims made against the doctor personally, for example, when there is a claim for compensation against a doctor by their patient in relation to healthcare provided. It also includes cover for the legal costs to defend the doctor at inquiries by a registration board, tribunal or complaints body for complaints.

On the other hand, a practice medical indemnity insurance policy is designed to protect the practice itself. The policy offers broad protection for the practice entity and its staff for healthcare services provided by the practice. A practice policy will not cover doctors employed by the practice (they must have their own indemnity), but it will protect the practice against a claim it is brought into because of the actions of an employed doctor. This policy will also protect the practice against matters such as privacy breaches, telehealth and employment disputes.
