Avant’s recent live online panel event gathered together our top medico-legal advisers to discuss the current PPE guidelines and related issues that may affect specialist practitioners.

    About the experts

    Dr Matthew Doane

    Dr Matthew Doane is a dual boarded and internationally trained anaesthesiologist who is both a Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology and a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. He is a Staff Specialist in the Department of Anaesthesia at Royal North Shore Hospital, where he serves as the Head of Academics and Research, and is a Conjoint Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney Medical School. Dr Doane has a strong interest in clinical research and education, and a passion for collaborating outside of specialty silos to improve outcomes for patients and the community.

    Ms Georgie Haysom
    Head of Advocacy, Education and Research, Avant

    As a lawyer who has worked in health law for over 25 years, Georgie assists and advises doctors on a wide range of medico-legal issues. She is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has a Bachelor of Science (Pharmacology), Bachelor of Laws (Hons 1) from the University of Sydney and a Master of Laws specialising in bioethics from McGill University. She is a member of the Australian Digital Health Agency’s Privacy and Security Advisory Committee.

    Ms Sonya Black
    Special Counsel, Employment – Medico-legal Advisory Service, Avant

    Sonya advises medical practitioners and medical practices across Australia about a broad range of employment issues. She has over 20 years’ experience as an employment lawyer, including over 10 years advising about employment issues in public hospitals and private medical practice.

    Dr Jack Marjot
    Advanced Trainee in Emergency Medicine and Medical Adviser – Advocacy, Education and Research, Avant

    Jack is an Advanced Trainee in Emergency Medicine in Sydney and is working as a medical adviser at Avant. For the last six weeks he has been focusing on COVID-19 and its effects on doctors at an individual and healthcare level.
