  • What does the Avant professional indemnity insurance* cover?

    Avant’s Medico-legal Advisory Service (MLAS) provides expert advice to help minimise the chance of a complaint or claim occurring. The service is staffed by 70 claims managers, solicitors and doctors in our Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney offices. Our medico-legal experts are available 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year - after hours and on weekends in emergencies.

    The team responds to more than 1,000 calls a month from doctors and practices. So whatever situation you find yourself in, you can be confident no one has more expertise to advice you.

    What is the difference between Avant’s Practitioner Indemnity Insurance, and Practice Medical Indemnity Insurance

    The Practitioner Indemnity Insurance Policy is designed to protect the interests and needs of the doctor. It provides cover for claims made against the doctor personally, for example when a doctor is sued by their patient in relation to the healthcare they provided, and includes cover for the legal costs to defend the doctor at inquiries by the Medical Board of Australia and other disciplinary proceedings.

    On the other hand Avant’s Practice Medical Indemnity Insurance Policy is designed to protect the practice (business entity). It also offers broad protection for the practice management and staff for the healthcare services they provide. And while a practice policy does not cover doctors employed by the practice (they have their own individual policies), it will protect the practice as far as they are brought into the claim because of the actions of one of the doctors.
