A Practical Guide to Managing Medical Record Requests

Jan 29, 2015

Avant has helped the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) in the development of a practical guide on how GPs can safely and consistently manage medical record data requests.

"GP practices are becoming increasingly inundated with requests for patients' medical records from a wide variety of sources and there can often be confusion about how best to respond," Dr Penny Browne, Avant Senior Medical Officer and Head of Public Policy said.

"The RACGP has produced a new guide to assist practices manage these requests.

"By following the practical advice on how to determine the best way to respond and the recommended data set to supply should make it easier for practices."

The guide covers what GPs should include in response to requests for records such as those received by:

  • Subpoena or court order;
  • Third parties such as Work Cover;
  • Other medical practices.

The guide can be found on the RACGP’s website.
