Avant has kicked off its three-year partnership with the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) at the AOA’s Bone Camp in February. Starting from 1 January 2018, the Avant-AOA partnership is dedicated to enhancing current AOA initiatives for orthopaedic surgeons and trainees in the areas of medico-legal risk management, professionalism, ethics and leadership. As part of this, Avant will continue to collaborate with the AOA on their program of national and state events throughout the year.
A compulsory event for first-year orthopaedic trainees, Avant supported Bone Camp 2018 which featured practical sessions and workshop presentations at the University of New South Wales Sydney campus.
Commenting on the new partnership, Lawrie Malisano, AOA President said, "Bone Camp 2018 saw AOA and Avant join forces to successfully facilitate workshops on professionalism and risk education for new orthopaedic trainees. These sessions were very well received.”
Georgie Haysom, Avant’s Head of Research, Education and Advocacy, co-presented a workshop on professionalism and health and wellbeing with AOA’s Dean of Education, Dr Ian Incoll. Using hypothetical case studies, the workshop outlined scenarios new registrars may encounter, from privacy and consent protocols around using and disseminating clinical images, to maintaining a work-life balance and navigating on-call dilemmas in the hospital environment.
Adrian Cosenza, AOA CEO added, “AOA looks forward to a further three years of collaboration with the Avant team across a range of AOA programs and events to enhance the knowledge and skills of our members in areas including health advocacy and medico-legal issues, to achieve the best patient outcomes.”
As MDO Diamond Education Partner, Avant will work closely with the association to advocate on shared member interests and provide high-quality specialist education, training and continuing professional development for orthopaedic surgeons on a local, national and international level.
Avant will support other AOA events throughout the year, including the Emerging Leaders’ Forum from 26 – 27 October in Sydney. The forum is for fellows and final year trainees who have been selected to participate in leadership training on topics including leadership, management, ethics and professionalism.
AOA will also hold its 78th Annual Scientific Meeting in Perth from 7 – 11 October, where Avant will be formally recognised as an AOA Diamond partner.
