Creating the safest possible workplace for healthcare workers during COVID-19

04 September 2020 | Avant Media

Message from Avant’s Chair, Dr Beverley Rowbotham

While Avant welcomes the Victorian Government’s increased transparency regarding healthcare worker COVID-19 infections during this Victorian second wave, we are extremely concerned that, as of 31 August 2020, there have been over 3,000 healthcare worker infections in Victoria.

More action is needed to provide the safest possible environment for healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this three minute video, Dr Beverley Rowbotham, Chair of the Avant Mutual Board, outlines the steps we are taking, on behalf of members, to help create the safest possible environment for healthcare workers.

The figures released by the Victorian Government on 25th August 2020 show that:

  • 86% of all healthcare worker infections in the Victorian second wave have been determined as likely to have been acquired at work.
  • For medical practitioners where the source of infection has been investigated, 77% of infections were acquired at work.
  • 42% of healthcare worker infections have occurred in the aged care setting.
  • Within the hospital setting, 73% of COVID-19 infections are of nurses, while 11% are of medical practitioners.

We believe that the key to creating the safest possible workplace for healthcare workers during COVID-19 involves implementing the following workplace health and safety hierarchy of controls.

HCW infection control

At present, we are focused on supporting doctors through the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are committed to doing everything we can to advocate for the safest possible workplace for healthcare workers.

Please don’t hesitate to let us know what issues you are facing and how we can help.
