The Directors, former Directors, members and staff of Avant Mutual Group were saddened at the news of the death of the Hon John Fahey AC and send their condolences to his wife Colleen and family.
Mr Fahey made an outstanding contribution as a director of Avant Mutual, joining the board of its predecessor company United Medical Protection (UMP) in 2004 and serving until his retirement in 2019.
He helped guide UMP out of the medical indemnity crisis of the early 2000s and played a significant role in the merger of UMP with the Medical Defence Association of Victoria to form Avant Mutual in 2007. Mr Fahey was also Chair of the Doctors' Health Fund from 2014 to 2019.
He was a man of great principle who had an astute legal mind and a deep understanding of public policy. He regarded his time at Avant as another facet of his long contribution to public service, this time to Australia’s doctors. He served them well. He understood the complexity of their working lives and defended their right to fair workplaces and fair treatment.
John Fahey will be greatly missed by everyone at Avant.
